APRIL 6TH ,2012 - The long gun registry is finally over. The legislation has received Royal Assent.
Long-gun owners will no longer be required to register their firearms and the process of destroying the data in the registry related to non-restricted firearms will begin as soon as feasible. Controls over restricted and prohibited firearms will continue to be maintained.
Under this legislation, firearms owners must still hold a valid firearms licence in order to acquire and possess a firearm. They must also pass the required Canadian Firearms Safety Course and undergo the necessary screening process. In addition, individuals will continue to be required to obtain a registration certificate for prohibited and restricted firearms, such as handguns.
Note: Any (Non- Restricted ) firearms going to Quebec Must still be registered until further notice.
